GUR Hits Gazprom's Largest Gas Field

Cyber attack results in major explosion and fire

Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense’s Offensive Cyber unit has struck again. This time the target was Gazprom Dobycha Yamburg LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gazprom in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, which is home to the second largest gas field in the world with recoverable reserves of up to 10 trillion m3 of gas according to a Gazprom announcement reported by Pravda.

“A depressurization occurred at the Urengoyskoye field with a fire in the second line of the gas collector, located between the integrated gas treatment units UKPG-7 and UKPG-8V. There were no casualties. OOO Gazprom dobycha Urengoy promptly carried out measures to suspend the operation of production facilities, redistribute gas flows, contain and eliminate the fire. At 02:05 the fire was extinguished. At 02:50, production facilities were put back into operation. The incident did not affect the fulfillment of the gas production targets. The cause of the incident will be established by a specially created commission,” the press service of the company said.”

The hackers responsible for this and earlier attacks shared the news exclusively with Inside Cyber Warfare early this morning at 0230 PDT, along with 32MB of files taken from Gazprom’s network that are pertinent to this attack.
